Legal and technology professionals have welcomed new advice, saying it’s crucial organisations recognise potential bias when using artificial intelligence.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has issued new guidance on how public sector organisations can avoid discrimination when using artificial intelligence (AI). 

The guidance, which lays out how the use of algorithms in organisational decision-making and people practice can result in bias, as well as where some of the common fixes to counter this fall short, has been praised by experts in legal and tech, who say it’s crucial for businesses. 

The guidance also includes calls to eliminate unlawful AI discrimination and to improve opportunities for those with Equality Act protected characteristics, laying out why organisations need to speak to their staff to understand this technology’s impact and review whether new training is needed as a result.
